The downside of guest side polling is that polling is performed even with other runnable tasks in the host. However, even if poll in kvm can aware whether or not other runnable tasks in the same pCPU, it can still incur extra overhead in over-subscribe scenario. cpuidle-haltpoll can be built as a module to allow optional late load. Given we are setting @owner to THIS_MODULE, cpuidle will attempt to grab a module reference every time a cpuidle_device is registered -- so essentially all online cpus get a reference. This prevents for the module to be unloaded later, which makes the module_exit callback entirely unused. Thus remove the @owner and allow module to be unloaded. When a user loads cpuidle-haltpoll on a non KVM guest the module will successfully load, even though idle driver registration didn't take place. We should instead return -ENODEV signaling the user that the driver can't be loaded, like other error paths in haltpoll_init(). An example of such error paths is when we return -EBUSY when attempting to register an idle driver when it had one already (e.g. intel_idle loads at boot and then we attempt to insert module cpuidle-haltpoll). Right now, guest current governors have the following ratings: * ladder -> 10 * teo -> 19 * menu -> 20 * haltpoll -> 21 * ladder + nohz=off -> 25 haltpoll governor got introduced and it is now the default governor given its highest rating -- with ladder+nohz being the exception -- regardless of idle driver in the guest. An example of an undesirable case is x86 KVM guests with MWAIT which have intel_idle registered first, and consequently will have haltpoll be used as governor which would get limited to a poll state and state 1 and the other states wouldn't get used. To keep the previous defaults we decrease rating of governor to 9 (below current lowest rating) and thus rely on @governor switch on cpuidle_register_driver() to tie in haltpoll idle driver and governor together. The recently introduced haltpoll driver is largely only useful with haltpoll governor. To allow drivers to associate with a particular idle behaviour, add a @governor property to 'struct cpuidle_driver' and thus allow a cpuidle driver to switch to a *preferred* governor on idle driver registration. We save the previous governor, and when an idle driver is unregistered we switch back to that. The @governor can be overridden by cpuidle.governor= boot param or alternatively be ignored if the governor doesn't exist. The resolution of the idle injection is limited to 1ms. If there is a need for an injection of 1.2 ms, it is not possible. The idle injection API is not yet used, so it is safe to convert the existing API to the new time unit instead of adding more functions. The play_idle resolution is 1ms. The intel_powerclamp bases the idle duration on jiffies. The idle injection API is also using msec based duration but has no user yet. Unfortunately, msec based time does not fit well when we want to inject idle cycle precisely with shallow idle state. In order to set the scene for the incoming idle injection user, move the precision up to usec when calling play_idle. When cpus != maxcpus cpuidle-haltpoll will fail to register all vcpus past the online ones and thus fail to register the idle driver. This is because cpuidle_add_sysfs() will return with -ENODEV as a consequence from get_cpu_device() return no device for a non-existing CPU. Instead switch to cpuidle_register_driver() and manually register each of the present cpus through cpuhp_setup_state() callbacks and future ones that get onlined or offlined. This mimmics similar logic that intel_idle does. In commit 99cd149e ("sgiseeq: replace use of dma_cache_wback_inv"), a call to 'get_zeroed_page()' has been turned into a call to 'dma_alloc_coherent()'. Only the remove function has been updated to turn the corresponding 'free_page()' into 'dma_free_attrs()'. The error hndling path of the probe function has not been updated. Fix it now. Rename the corresponding label to something more in line. Pull x86 fixes from Thomas Gleixner: "A set of fixes for x86: - Fix the bogus detection of 32bit user mode for uretprobes which caused corruption of the user return address resulting in application crashes. In the uprobes handler in_ia32_syscall() is obviously always returning false on a 64bit kernel. Use user_64bit_mode() instead which works correctly. - Prevent large page splitting when ftrace flips RW/RO on the kernel text which caused iTLB performance issues. Ftrace wants to be converted to text_poke() which avoids the problem, but for now allow large page preservation in the static protections check when the change request spawns a full large page. - Prevent arch_dynirq_lower_bound() from returning 0 when the IOAPIC is configured via device tree. In the device tree case the GSI 1:1 mapping is meaningless therefore the lower bound which protects the GSI range on ACPI machines is irrelevant. Return the lower bound which the core hands to the function instead of blindly returning 0 which causes the core to allocate the invalid virtual interupt number 0 which in turn prevents all drivers from allocating and requesting an interrupt. - Remove the bogus initialization of LDR and DFR in the 32bit bigsmp APIC driver. This change enables the use of SW timestamping on the Raspberry Pi 4. bcmgenet's transmit function bcmgenet_xmit() implements software timestamping. However the SOF_TIMESTAMPING_TX_SOFTWARE capability was missing and only SOF_TIMESTAMPING_RX_SOFTWARE was announced. By using ethtool_ops bcmgenet_ethtool_ops() as get_ts_info(), the SOF_TIMESTAMPING_TX_SOFTWARE capability is announced. On embedded environments with hard memory limits it is a normal although rare case when skb can't be allocated on rx part under high traffic. In such OOM cases napi_complete_done() was not called. So the napi object became in an invalid state like it is "scheduled". Kernel do not re-schedules the poll of that napi object. Consequently, kernel can not remove that object the system hangs on `ifconfig down` waiting for a poll. We are fixing this by gracefully closing napi poll routine with correct invocation of napi_complete_done. This was reproduced with artificially failing the allocation of skb to simulate an "out of memory" error case and check that traffic does not get stuck. Declaring threaded irq handler should also indicate the irq is oneshot. It is oneshot indeed, because HW implements irq automasking on trigger. Not declaring this causes some kernel configurations to fail on interface up, because request_threaded_irq returned an err code. The issue was originally hidden on normal x86_64 configuration with latest kernel, because depending on interrupt controller, irq driver added ONESHOT flag on its own. Issue was observed on older kernels (4.14) where no such logic exists. In case of device reconfiguration the driver may reset the device invisible for other modules, vlan module in particular. So vlans will not be removed&created and vlan filters will not be configured in the device. The patch reapplies the vlan filters at device start. The taprio budget needs to be adapted at runtime according to interface link speed. But that handling is problematic. For one thing, installing a qdisc on an interface that doesn't have carrier is not illegal. Which again is not illegal, the qdisc will dequeue even when the interface is up but doesn't have carrier (and hence SPEED_UNKNOWN), and the frames will be dropped further down the stack in dev_direct_xmit(). And, at the end of the day, for what? For calculating the initial budget of an interface which is non-operational at the moment and where frames will get dropped anyway. So if we can't figure out the link speed, default to SPEED_10 and move along. We can also remove the runtime check now. taprio_init may fail earlier than this line: list_add(&q->taprio_list, &taprio_list); i.e. due to the net device not being multi queue. Attempting to remove q from the global taprio_list when it is not part of it will result in a kernel panic. Fix it by matching list_add and list_del better to one another in the order of operations. This way we can keep the deletion unconditional and with lower complexity - O(1). Commit 9392bd98 ("tools/power turbostat: Add support for AMD Fam 17h (Zen) RAPL") and the commit 3316f99a ("tools/power turbostat: Also read package power on AMD F17h (Zen)") add AMD Fam 17h RAPL support. Hygon Family 18h(Dhyana) support RAPL in bit 14 of CPUID 0x80000007 EDX, and has MSRs RAPL_PWR_UNIT/CORE_ENERGY_STAT/PKG_ENERGY_STAT. So add Hygon Dhyana Family 18h support for RAPL. Already tested on Hygon multi-node systems and it shows correct per-core energy usage and the total package power.
